Barcelona’s Spanish champion Gavi was involved in a heated exchange with Vinícius Júnior during Sunday’s 2-0 win over Real Madrid at Camp Nou. After the match, the midfielder gave details of the disagreement to the Spanish press but downplayed the feud.
“I told him to shut up, that’s all. What happens on the pitch is one thing, what happens off it is another. On the pitch, I defend my colors and give my all. Off it, I’m a completely different person, even if it doesn’t seem like it,” Gavi said.
The scuffle broke out in the 50th minute when Asencio received a yellow card for kicking the ball after the play was stopped and was pushed by Barcelona players. Vinícius rushed to defend his teammate and was confronted by Gavi and other opponents.
“Vinícius is just about football. What happens on the pitch stays on the pitch. He’s a hotheaded player, just like me. Vinícius is a fantastic player,” Gavi added.
Although the Spaniard tried to calm things down, the bad blood between him and Vinícius goes back a long way. At the end of 2024, the two clashed during Barcelona’s 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid in La Liga. After the match, the Catalan player fouled the Brazilian hard, prompting Vinícius to ask the referee for a yellow card. Gavi taunted the number 7 by making a “four” gesture with his hand.
After the final whistle, Gavi posted a photo on social media making the “four” sign toward Vinícius, who appeared visibly angry. The Brazilian had a quiet performance in that match.
